The mission statement is a tool that is sometimes developed and then not used. A lot of hard work and time is spent getting the words just right and everyone is glad when someone declares it is "finished." It is popular to say that the mission rarely changes because it is rarely ever completed. However, if your organization used your mission as a way of measuring the legitimacy of your decisions and operations, it might be necessary to adjust your mission periodically. The condition of those your organization serves might change for the better or worse. The area that your organization impacts may grow or shrink. There may be other organizations that now provide the same service that your organization provides. The problem that your organization addressed might have been alleviated by new technology.
